This weekend the BF and I were a little under the weather- partially thanks to a crazy last weekend we were still recovering from. Plus, I think my immune system is trying to get used to standing on a train platform when it's 50 and rainy.
Any who. An excursion wasn't in the cards this weekend, so instead of going somewhere we brought a little bit of Chicago to us. Nothing says Chicago like a little deep dish pizza.
Everyone has their favorite, and since I'm used to a totally different style of pizza I'm on a quest to find mine. I'm much more of a New York style pizza gal. I like the grease dripping off, and it's so big you have to fold it in half to eat. YUM. I've had 2 other places known for their deep dish since moving- Giordano's and Gino's- so now it was time to try a true Chicago staple. Now entering, Lou Malnati's.
Here's my assessment.
The crust is TO DIE FOR. It's so buttery and crunchy that I took a second piece and just ate the crust. The sauce had great flavor but was a little thin for my taste. I like a good, thick tomato sauce. This was a little runnier than others and didn't seem to hold up well. It was like chunks of tomatoes in a water. The sausage also had really great flavor. I liked that it was a thin layer over the entire pizza and not the random chunks you usually get. The major downfall of Lou's deep dish was that they went a little skimpy on the cheese. If I order it again I will definitely ask for extra cheese.
My final decision.
The perfect deep dish pizza would be to take Lou Malniti's crust and put it on a Giordano's pizza. Giordano's knows how to do a great sauce and doesn't skimp on the cheese! I would skip Gino's altogether. It just doesn't compare to Lou Malnati's or Giordano's.
